“Cariño, tenemos que hablar”: Sin conversación, no hay Marketing

 

“Los mercados son conversaciones”. Esta es la primera tesis del ClueTrain Manifesto. Publicado en 1999, sus autores argumentan cómo las nuevas tecnologías cambiarán el modo de hacer negocios. El tiempo les da la razón, aunque muchas empresas continúan sin darse por aludidas. 

 

Hoy todos somos contertulios. Cada uno es, a su vez, cliente, proveedor, competidor, amigo, crítico de los demás. Todos manifestamos nuestras opiniones. Ellas determinan la visibilidad de un producto, un servicio o un profesional. La reputación orienta la decisión -la decisión de comprar o no, leer o no, contratar o no, descargarse o no, responder o no. Por eso hoy el Marketing  y las empresas no pueden vivir de espaldas a las conversaciones.

 

“Internet es la mayor conversación de la historia”
Esta afirmación de Steve Morris (Palabras e-electrónicas, ISBN: 84-205-3213-4) refleja que nunca antes tantas personas habían podido compartir información y opiniones superando la distancia y el tiempo.

 

Las conversaciones en Internet se dan a través del envío de emails, la participación en foros y otros espacios de relación comunitaria.  Como formato emergente destacan las bitácoras, cuyo ritmo de crecimiento continúa imparable y configura el llamado “periodismo social”.

 

La reticencia de las empresas –“no quiero/no puedo permitirme/ no sé ser transparente”- es una pobre defensa ante la nueva realidad. En su artículo sobre por qué funcionan los blogs corporativos, Hugh McLeod lo explica así: La “membrana” que  separa la empresa de su ecosistema es cada vez más porosa: sus empleados, sus proveedores, sus clientes y usuarios hablan de la empresa, de sus productos y servicios, lo quiera la empresa o no. Las conversaciones interna y externa están convergiendo.

 

Conversaciones internas
Parece que las olvidamos, pero lo cierto es que también se dan conversaciones en el interior de las empresas. Las tecnologías posibilitan a los colaboradores compartir conocimiento y también compartir posición. En un entorno en el cual la oferta de perfiles cualificados es ya inferior a la demanda empresarial, las empresas tienen que conversar con su ecosistema y sus empleados para captar, retener y optimizar el talento. El jueves pasado di una conferencia ante un centenar de empresarios en Girona. Los asistentes coincidían en diagnosticar la gestión del talento como uno de los ejes de su éxito/fracaso empresarial. La gestión de la reputación
Tom Peters dio un paso más allá al afirmar que las personas somos, a título individual, una empresa: Yo, S.L. Nuestros valores y objetivos determinan nuestro posicionamiento en el mercado y, por tanto, nuestra visibilidad. La manera como los otros (clientes, competidores, colegas,…) nos perciben también se articula en conversaciones, on y off-line. En este marco se inscriben las estrategias de gestión de la propia marca como el Egosurfing.

 

La gestión de la conversación
Estos tres formatos –la conversación en línea, la conversación interna y la gestión de la reputación personal- determinan a mi entender la manera como hoy nos relacionamos. Nuestro mercado –corporativo o personal- habla y nosotros tenemos que poder participar en esa conversación y, en lo posible, mejorarla: “La decisión de mantener una “conversación más inteligente” ya es más que una decisión de Marketing: se trata hoy de una decisión moral.”
